Women's Basketball 2/4/09 -- Concordia-Moorhead 64, Augsburg 48
MINNEAPOLIS (2/4/09) -- Shannon Renne (SO, Nicollet, Minn.) led the Auggies with 17 points and Christa Suedbeck (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) posted her sixth double-double of the season with a 13-point, 13-rebound effort, but Augsburg College dropped a 64-48 Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball game to Concordia College-Moorhead on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (4-16 overall, 2-15 MIAC) was led by Renne's 17 points and three steals. Suedbeck matched her performance from Monday night with the 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Serenae Levine (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Auggies with three assists.
Concordia (15-5 overall, 14-3 MIAC) was led by the duo of Jenna Freudenberg (SR, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) and Maggie Bauernfeind (SO, Rosemount, Minn). Freudenberg posted 10 points and tied a game-high four assists, while Bauernfeind added 10 points, two rebounds and a blocked shot for the Cobbers.
The Cobbers went on a 17-0 run to start the first half, as the Auggies struggled to find their offensive rhythm. Augsburg rallied with a 10-4 run to cut the Concordia lead to 11 off a jumper by Suedbeck at the 9:38 mark. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half as Concordia took a 32-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
The halftime lead proved to be too much for the Auggies to overcome, as the Cobbers pulled away for the win. For the game, Augsburg shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the floor, while Concordia shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56). The Auggies won the battle on the boards 38-29, but were not able to keep up with the depth of the Cobbers as Concordia outscored the Auggies in bench points 29-6.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/7), when it travels to Macalester College for a men's and women's doubleheader. Women's action begins at 1 p.m. and the men tip off at 3 p.m.
