MINNEAPOLIS --
Stefani Zappa (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) collected five pars en route to medalist honors with a score of 90, leading the Augsburg College women's golf team to a season-opening dual-meet victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Tuesday afternoon at Columbia Golf Course.
Collecting pars on three of her last six holes, Zappa earned medalist honors for the second time in her career, leading the Auggies to a 399 team total. Wisconsin-River Falls shot a 405 total.
"Starting off the season with a win feels good. The team worked hard in pratice and was prepared to play today," said Augsburg head coach Ted Vickerman. "I gave the team some mental game instruction so before the match the team said they wanted to play 'Ted in your head.' The mental game instruction helped the team keep a positive attitude and allowed them to focus on having fun. The team made two birdies on the last hole, which showed me that they stayed in the present and did not think about outcomes. This is very hard to do in golf because every one wants to play good, but the harder you try, usually the worse you play."
Kelsey Corrick (JR, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) shot her first collegiate birdie on the 311-yard, par-4 18th hole to finish with a total of 96 to finish second in the 13-player field, tying the second-lowest round of her career.
Miranda Maxwell (FY, Delano, Minn.), in her first collegiate tournament, shot 97 as an individual to place third.
"It was nice to see Augsburg have the top three scores for the day," Vickerman said. "The team has all the talent and potential they need to have a breakout year."
Also for the Auggies,
Johanna Frykmark (JR, Taby, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS) shot 103 to take seventh, and
Jill Ferguson (FY, Batavia, Ill.), in her first collegiate meet, shot 110 to tie for ninth.
Megan Dale (SR, Northfield, Minn.) shot 113 and
Jenna Marquardt (SO, New Prague, Minn.) shot 124.
For Wisconsin-River Falls, Kelly Gordh led the way with a 97 total, tying for third. Mackenzie Casey shot 98 to place fifth, Janae Lyon shot 101 to place sixth and Courtney Swanson shot 109 to take eighth. Kathryn Theien, competing as an individual, shot 110 and Kate Gjerning shot 116.
Augsburg returns to action at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (9/5-6).
