MINNEAPOLIS --
Ahmed Gobana (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) scored two goals, and
Jeff Webster (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) claimed his first collegiate shutout in goal, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 4-0 win over Buena Vista University (Iowa) in a nonconference contest Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Gobana put the Auggies (4-0-1 overall) on the scoreboard in the 29th minute, taking a cross-crease feed from #T.J. Haag# (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Burnsville HS) and putting the ball into the open net.
David Scheller (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Gobana then finished the scoring with his third goal of the season in the 88th minute, taking a long feed off a punt by Webster and putting the ball home to give the Auggies the final margin of victory.
"Gobana is getting better and better each game, and his counterpart
David Scheller was incredibly dangerous in one-vs.-one battles tonight," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Webster wasn't tested on the night as the shots he faced were from 30 yards out, but his punt to Gobana for the fourth goal showed how dangerous he allows us to be on the counter attack. "
Between Gobana's goals, the Auggies scored twice in a 63-second span on headers coming off of cross-crease feeds -- the first from
Ryan Sorensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) to
Gottlieb Uahengo (FY, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) for Uahengo's first collegiate goal at the 75:05 mark; and the second from
Matt Bowman (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) to All-American
Alex Hildebrandt (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) for a diving header following a corner kick at the 76:08 mark.
"We dragged the game on a bit before Gottlieb finally put the 2nd goal away, which really opened up the door for more," Holker said. "We finally connected on a corner kick and Hilde finished Bowman's service with authority. Bowman disappeared for a bit of the first half, but came back very involved in the second session."
Augsburg dominated play throughout the game, outshooting Buena Vista (1-5-0 overall) by a 32-5 margin and claiming a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Webster stopped four shots for his first collegiate shutout and second collegiate win in goal for the Auggies.
Dustin Dobbels (SO, Olathe, Kan./Olathe East HS) claimed eight saves in goal for Buena Vista.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/16) at 7:30 p.m, with a home game against St. John's at Edor Nelson Field.
"St. John's comes in on Wednesday for a game that counts; MIAC ball changes everything," Holker said. "The Johnnies got a great result on the road today at Dubuque (2-1 win) after dropping a close one to Wartburg 3-2 on Friday night. Colin Hall leads that squad and will make sure the Johnnies are firing on all cylinders. We should have most of our players healthy and available for that game."
