ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- On her 21st birthday,
Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) delivered a present for her Augsburg College women's soccer team -- a much-needed victory.
Her goal in the 48th minute enabled Augsburg (2-3-2 overall) to break a three-game losing streak, as the lone tally in the Auggies' 1-0 nonconference win at Northwestern College-Roseville on Tuesday evening.
Augsburg goalkeeper
Katie Flakne (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had to make just one save to earn her first collegiate shutout.
Augsburg dominated play in Tuesday's game, claiming a 15-4 advantage over Northwestern (0-4-1 overall) in shots -- including a 7-0 margin in the second half -- and a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.
But the Auggies weren't able to put the ball in the net until early in the second half, when midfielder
Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) took a pass from defender
Carly Reimer (FY, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) at midfield and fed Hoover down the right side. Hoover worked her way into the box and put a shot over the Northwestern goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning goal.
Hoover and
Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who moved from defense to forward on Tuesday, had six shots apiece to lead the Auggies.
Northwestern goalkeeper Rhonda Morgan had six saves in the game.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with the first of six straight games at Edor Nelson Field, hosting Macalester on Saturday (9/26) at 7 p.m.
