ST. PAUL, Minn. --  A header for a goal with 1:48 remaining in the second half gave host Macalester College a 1-0 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday evening at Macalester Stadium.

Carson Gorecki headed home a left-side feed from Stephen Murphy-Logue, who had eluded a pair of Augsburg defenders following a corner kick.

Augsburg, ranked No. 15 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national rankings, drops to 5-2-1 overall, 1-2-0 in MIAC play. Macalester won its third straight game in improving to 4-3-1 overall, 2-0-0 in MIAC play.

"Reality is harsh. Macalester outworked us from start to finish tonight. They deserved everything they achieved. We earned everything we received," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "We went from thinking we were pretty good to wondering if we will make the MIAC playoffs in 90 minutes. Reality is harsh."

Augsburg outshot Macalester by a 14-12 margin, with Van Hong (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Ahmed Gobana (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) recording three shots apiece for the Auggies. The Auggies also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Pascaul Venter (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had three saves in goal for the Auggies, while Mark Mullaney had seven saves for Macalester.

Augsburg hosts No. 21-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a nonconference game on Friday (9/25) at 7 p.m.

"Now, we have to find away to hide two consecutive losses before playing host to a fantastic UW-Oshkosh team. They are ranked 21st in the country and have one of the best players in the region in Will Howell. They keep the ball, they are dangerous on set pieces, and they are very well coached," Holker said. "I anticipate that we will be a very different team than tonight -- both in personnel and in attitude."
