NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- A goal in the 64th minute gave St. Olaf College the cushion it would need in topping visiting Augsburg College 1-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at St. Olaf's Rolf Mellby Field.
Augsburg (5-4-1 overall, 1-3-0 MIAC) outshot St. Olaf by a 9-5 margin, but was unable to get a ball past St. Olaf goalkeeper Alex Kuehl, who had five saves for the win. Blake Dreesen scored from Nathan Swenson in the 64th minute for the Oles (7-1-1 overall, 3-1-0 MIAC), ranked No. 21 in the latest Division III national poll.
"This is the first time in my tenure an Augsburg team has dropped four in a row. All of the games have been by a goal, and we felt that we were good enough to win each of those contests. It's put us in a bit of a bind," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "The great thing is that a new month starts tomorrow. We need to forget about September and concentrate on improving each day. Results will fall in our favor again."
Seven different Auggies had shots in the contest, led by
Jeff Butler (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.), who had three shots in 34 minutes off the bench.
Jeff Webster (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) had two saves in goal for Augsburg.
"I thought
Alex Hildebrandt (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and
Peter Loyd (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) played with some real quality in addition to their strong work rate," Holker said. "
Lucas Ingram (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) did a good job defending; I would like to see him get forward a bit more, but that will come with some reinforcement in training.
Nick Anderson (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) provided a good outlet for us, and almost tied the game with 50 seconds to go.
Jeff Butler also did very well in that role and had his chance miss wide in the 38th minute."
Augsburg is now idle for a week-and-a-half, returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field.
