Winning streak snapped at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Claiming a 45-24 advantage in shots-on-goal, the Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team ended Augsburg College's seven-game winning streak with a 6-2 decision in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.

David Hines and Cory Ellertson scored goals for Augsburg (9-4-1 overall, 2-2-1 MIAC), with Jim Jensen assisting both goals. Hines scored a power-play goal at the 13:59 mark of the second period, and Ellertson scored at the 13:37 mark of the third period.

Eric Bigham scored two goals and had two assists for Gustavus (11-4-1 overall, 5-1-1 MIAC), the defending NCAA Division III national runner-up. Brad Wieck had a goal and an assist, as did David Martinson and Ross Ring-Jarvi.

Nate Pellegrino took the loss in goal for the Auggies, with 20 saves. Jon Zitur relieved Pellegrino in the second period and had 19 saves. Josh Swartout picked up the win for the Gusties in goal, with 22 saves.

The Gusties outshot the Auggies by a 32-13 margin through the first two periods, building a 5-1 lead. Both teams scored a goal in the third period, with the Gusties outshooting the Auggies 13-11.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/16) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
