Renne continues hot streak but Auggies fall to Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Shannon Renne (JR, Nicollet, Minn.) continued her recent hot streak, scoring 32 points and posting a season-high four steals as the Auggies dropped a heartbreaker to Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference action on Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

Augsburg (3-12 overall, 3-9 MIAC) was led offensively by Renne, who posted her third consecutive 26-plus point performance. She also added three rebounds and two assists on the evening. In her last three games, Renne is shooting 55.5 percent (20-for-36) from beyond the arc and currently leads the MIAC in three-point field goals made with 41.

Newcomer Micha Sater (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) posted a career-best 15 points and added seven rebounds for the Auggies, marking her third consecutive double digit scoring performance. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was Tracee Schrank (FY, Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area HS), who finished with 11 points and three rebounds.

Hamline (7-8 overall, 5-7 MIAC) was led by Mary Wilkowski, who finished with a game-high 30 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

In a very evenly matched contest, neither team was able to increase their lead to double digits. Hamline found themselves up by nine with 12:48 left to play in the second half before Augsburg rallied with 9-1 run to bring the score withing one at 58-57. A jumper and made free throw by Renne with 2:12 left to play tied things up at 73-73. Hamline went on a 7-0 run over the next minute of action, giving the Pipers an 80-73 advantage. Augsburg was able to cut the Piper lead to four but was not able to convert on their final scoring attempts as the Auggies fell 82-78.

For the game, Augsburg shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) from the floor, while the Pipers connected on 55.7 percent (34-of-61) of their shots. Augsburg won the battle on the boards 40-35 and was able to claim a large advantage at the charity stripe where they finished 21-of-24, while Hamline finished only 9-of-14.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/23) when it travels to St. Paul to take on St. Catherine University in an attempt to sweep the season series with the Wildcats.
