Concordia tops Augsburg 4-1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Abbie Hawthorne (FY, Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central HS) scored her first collegiate goal for Augsburg College late in the first period, but Concordia College-Moorhead scored four straight goals to claim a 4-1 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Katelyn Dold (SO, St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) scored two goals and had an assist for Concordia (8-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 MIAC), including an empty-net goal in the final minute. Emily Sell (JR, Williston, N.D.) and Kayla Thorson (SR, Rugby, N.D./Minot HS) also scored for the Cobbers.

Concordia outshot Augsburg (1-11-2 overall, 1-4-2 MIAC) by a 38-22 margin in the game, with Augsburg goalie Toni Menth (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) collecting 34 saves. Desiree Goret (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) had 21 saves for Concordia.

Augsburg took the early lead, as Hawthorne scored from Erica Berthold (FY, Issaquah, Wash.) at the 17:28 mark of the first period.

Concordia scored twice in the second period, with Sell scoring from Dold at the 6:48 mark, and Dold scoring from Kayla Hendrickson (SO, Sartell, Minn.) at the 15:57 mark. The Cobbers got an insurance goal on the power play at the 8:12 mark of the third period, as Thorson scored from Macy Leland (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) and Ali Nelson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.), and Dold scored from Sell with an empty net at the 19:49 mark.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/23) at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
