Auggie rally falls short to Pipers

BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored twice for Augsburg College to rally the Auggies from a 2-0, first-period deficit, but Hamline University's Brian Arrigoni also scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, as the Pipers scored a 3-2 win over the visiting Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the Drake Ice Arena.

Sauer scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season at the 1:55 mark and 17:13 mark in the second period, rallying Augsburg (11-7-1 overall, 4-5-1 MIAC) back from a 2-0 deficit.

But Arrigoni scored at the 6:44 mark of the third period, giving Hamline (12-4-3 overall, 7-2-1 MIAC) a 3-2 lead that would hold up for the win. Hamline is ranked No. 8 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll.

Kelly Plude and Arrigoni scored for the Pipers in the first period, Plude at the 5:55 mark and Arrigoni at the 10:55 mark.

Sauer scored from #J.P. Perpich# (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) at the 1:55 mark of the second period, followed at the 17:13 mark by his goal from David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and Nick Guran (SO, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS).

Hamline outshot Augsburg by a 29-27 margin, with Piper goalie Beau Christian scoring the win with 25 saves. Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 19 saves in relief of starter Jon Zitur (So, Buffalo, Minn.), who had seven first-period saves.

Both teams return to MIAC play next weekend, as Augsburg faces St. Mary's and Hamline faces St. John's.
