BOXSCORE
SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Benjamin Wexler (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) and Owen Byrnes (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies extended their unbeaten streak to five straight games with a 2-0 win at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon.
Wexler scored on an assist from Joe Keller (SR, Wayzata, Minn.) in the 25th minute, and Byrnes scored his first collegiate goal from Tyler Heaps (SO, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) in the 49th minute.
"Keller played a great ball in for Wexler to flick over an onrushing goalkeeper. It was good to have both of those two get on the board after a bit of a drought," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Owen's goal was a great volley into the side of the net from another outside back, Tyler Heaps. Our backs were getting deep into the attack and that's when we are dangerous."
Augsburg (8-2-1 overall), ranked No. 23 nationally in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll, is unbeaten in its last five games (4-0-1). All eight of Augsburg's victories this season have come by shutout.
Goalkeeper Clayton Lynch (FY, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) continued to be perfect in his initial college season, improving to 4-0-0 with his fourth straight shutout, making seven saves. Lynch has yet to be scored on this year in 360 minutes of action, with 12 saves.
"UW-Superior is a good team. They had three guys in the middle of the park that caused us loads of problems. They forced Lynch into making some good saves -- I thought he performed very well on the day," Holker said.
Augsburg has another nonconference battle on Tuesday (10/5) at 7 p.m. with a game at Dubuque (Iowa). The game will be the first of four games in an 11-day span for the Auggies.
"We weren't as clean as we would like, but we did well to get a positive result and keep a clean sheet against a strong opponent," Holker said. "Tuesday's game will be even more challenging with all of the travel involved. This will be a busy seven-day stretch for us."
