Auggies knock off Cardinals 8-4

BLAINE, Minn. -- Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) had a hat trick and added two assists for a five-point night, as his Augsburg College men's hockey team scored an 8-4 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase contest on Saturday evening at Fogarty Arena.

Guran scored twice in a 2:12 span early in the game, then completed his hat trick with a power-play goal midway through the second period for the Auggies (1-1-0 overall). Linemate Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had a goal and three assists, as did Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS).

Despite being outshot by a 32-25 margin, the Auggies were able to take advantage of a 3-for-5 effort on the power play. Augsburg scored the first four goals of the game and built a 7-2 advantage midway through the third period.

Jon Zitur (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) collected 28 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Jason Horstman had 17 saves for St. Mary's.

Sauer opened the scoring for the Auggies with a power-play goal at the 2:24 mark of the first period, and Guran added tallies at the 4:17 and 6:29 mark. In the second period, Tedd Falk (JR, Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS) scored at the 2:27 mark, followed by power-play goals by Mjelleli and Guran. Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) scored for the Auggies at the 11:02 mark of the third period, and Trevor Tolibas (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS), a transfer from St. Mary's, scored against his former team at the 15:12 mark of the final frame.

Augsburg opens home play at Ed Saugestad Rink next weekend, with a game on Friday (11/5) at 7:05 p.m. against Wisconsin-River Falls, and a game on Saturday (11/6) at 7:05 p.m. against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
