Auggies edged in closing minutes

GAME BOXSCORE

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Ahmed Gobana (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored two second-half goals for Augsburg College, but a goal with 8:10 remaining in regulation time gave Concordia College-Moorhead a 4-3 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon.

Gobana scored from Matt Bowman (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 56th minute for Augsburg (8-4-1 overall, 2-2-1 MIAC), and scored again, assisted by goalkeeper Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) in the 63rd minute. Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) then tied the game with a goal from Owen Byrnes (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) in the 69th minute.

"When we showed up and started playing about the 60th minute, we put it on them, but still conceded goals to crush our comeback," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Gobana finished well twice and Gilmer's goal was one we have begged for all season. Good service and just let him outjump everyone -- so that was a positive moment. "

But Concordia (9-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 MIAC) gained the lead in the 82nd minute, as Kyle Quimby scored from Riley McGlynn. Philip Brubaker scored two goals for the Cobbers, and McGlynn had a goal and three assists.

Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 14-11 margin, but Cobber goalkeeper Peter Runquist collected six saves for the win. Morlock had one save for Augsburg.

"We had loads of chances and should have bagged four more, but that doesn't excuse what is happening with our team defending," Holker said. "We've given up eight goals in our last four games, and one of those was a shutout."

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/13) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field as a part of the Auggies' Homecoming week.

"We have Monday and Tuesday to lock it down and get back to our program's traditional strong point before we have to deal with Bethel, who beat us last season," Holker said. "We are looking forward to coming home. It's been a challenging string of games. Playing in front of our crowd -- specifically our alumni -- might just be the boost we need."
