Auggies fall 2-1 at St. Thomas

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored his nation-leading seventh goal of the season, but his Augsburg College men's hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

With his power-play goal at the 19:28 mark of the third period, Augsburg's (2-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) Guran now has seven goals in five games, the most goals of any player in NCAA Division III men's hockey, according to the Collegehockeystats.net website.

Guran's goal was assisted by Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS). Sauer's seven assists are also tied with six other players for the most assists in Division III men's hockey after Friday night's play.

St. Thomas (3-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC) opened the scoring with a goal late in the first period, as Tom O'Donnell scored from Tommy Westmark and Alex Niestrom. Matt Lipinski scored at the 3:34 mark of the second period, assisted by Westmark and Chris Hickey.

St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 27-17 margin. Geoff Sadjadi had 16 saves for the Tommies, while Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 25 saves for Augsburg.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/13) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Arena.
