Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored the game-winning goal 3:57 into overtime, and
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) claimed 34 saves in goal, as Augsburg College scored a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Guran scored his game-winner from
Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) with 1:03 left in the extra session, the second straight overtime game for Augsburg (2-1-1) to start the season. Guran now has a team-high six goals in the Auggies' four games so far this season, currently tied with Todd Krupka of the Milwaukee (Wis.) School of Engineering for the most goals in NCAA Division III men's hockey, according to the
Collegehockeystats.net website.
Ami Peled (FY, Encino, Calif./Bloomington Jefferson (Minn.) HS) scored his first collegiate goal for Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2-1-0), an unassisted marker at the 5:38 mark of the second period.
Augsburg opened the game strong, outshooting the Blugolds by a 15-4 margin in the first period.
Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) scored on the power play at the 5:38 mark, assisted by Guran and
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS).
But Wisconsin-Eau Claire had a strong second period, outshooting the Auggies by an 18-4 margin. In the game, the Blugolds held a 35-29 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Scott Pederson (JR, Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake HS), making his first start of the season in goal for the Blugolds, collected 27 saves in goal.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a series against St. Thomas. Next Friday's (11/12) game is at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., and next Saturday's (11/13) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
