Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored two goals and had two assists, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 6-3 victory over St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored the last two goals of the game for the Auggies (5-3-1 overall, 1-2-0 MIAC), while
Trevor Doden (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) had a goal and an assist.
Joe Harren (SO, Warroad, Minn.) had a goal and assist for St. John's (2-9-0 overall, 2-3-0 MIAC).
Augsburg built a 3-1 lead after two periods, with Sauer scoring twice and #B.J. McClellan# (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scoring his second goal of the season. But the Johnnies tied the game with two goals in the opening seven minutes of the third period, with Grant Ellena (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Mike Wallgren (SR, Oakdale, Minn.) scoring.
Augsburg regained the lead just nine seconds after the Johnnies tied the game, as Doden scored on a rebound off a
Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) shot. Mjelleli had two assists for the Auggies. Guran added his 10th and 11th goals of the season, including an empty-net marker in the final minute, to cap the Auggie scoring.
Guran's 11 goals this season are currently the most goals among all NCAA Division III men's hockey players, according to the
Collegehockeystats.net national statistics. His 1.22 goals per-game are second-most in Division III. Sauer's 12 assists are also the most nationally among Division III players, while Mjelleli's nine assists are tied for ninth-most nationally.
Augsburg outshot St. John's by a 30-25 margin in the game, with
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) recording 22 saves for the win in goal for the Auggies. He also had an assist on Sauer's second goal of the game, his first collegiate assist. Tony Civello (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 24 saves in goal for the Johnnies.
The teams complete the MIAC weekend series on Saturday (12/4) at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
