Auggies fall 3-2 to Royals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kali Holst (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored twice for Augsburg College, but the Auggies could not overcome Bethel University in a 3-2 decision for the Royals in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Sarah Kartak (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) scored two goals for Bethel (8-14-0 overall, 8-8-0 MIAC), and Paige Lemieux (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) and Molly Eagles (FY, Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) had two assists apiece. Kassy Sullivan (JR, Roseville, Minn.) had the other Bethel goal.

Augsburg scored the first goal of the game, as Holst scored a power-play tally from Devon Ellena (FY, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and Andrea Toft (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) at the 3:23 mark of the opening period.

But Bethel scored three unanswered goals to capture the win. Sullivan scored from Lemieux at the 10:27 mark of the first period, followed less than three minutes later by Kartak's first goal of the game, a power-play marker from Lemieux and Eagles. Kartak's second goal of the game came at the 18:24 mark of the second period, another power-play goal from Eagles and Anna Carlson (SO, Roseville, Minn.).

Augsburg pulled its goalie and scored a power-play marker with an extra attacker at the 18:59 mark of the third period, as Holst scored from Jeanna Dudley (FY, Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community HS).

Bethel outshot Augsburg by a 31-23 margin, with Jess Newstrom (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) collecting 21 saves for the win. Augsburg goalie Grace Edgar (JR, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) had 28 saves for Augsburg.

Augsburg completes its 2009-10 campaign with a series against Gustavus next weekend.
