Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) scored a season-high 15 points to lead Augsburg College to a convincing 86-75 win over St. John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff action on Tuesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. With the win, Augsburg advances to the MIAC semifinals, where they will travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
Augsburg (19-7 overall) was sparked by Quammen's 5-for-9 performance from behind the arc in addition to his four rebounds and four assists.
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) scored a team-high 18 points, while
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) each finished with 13 points.
St. John's (14-12 overall) was led by the duo of Aaron Burtzel and Sam Blank, who finished with 22 and 18 points respectively.
After a hard-fought first half, Augsburg found itself with at 39-34 lead at the intermission. The Auggies came out firing on all cylinders in the second half as they hit 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from the floor and 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from beyond the arc. Augsburg used a key 11-2 run over a two minute span in the second half to pull away from the Johnnies and cruise to an 86-75 win in front of an excited Augsburg crowd.
For the game, Augsburg shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, while the Johnnies converted on 46.6 percent (27-of-58) of their shots. St. John's claimed a 32-29 advantage on the boards but the Auggies were able to convert on 21-of-24 from the free throw line, while St. John's was only able to get to the free throw line for 16 attempts, converting on 14. Augsburg also tied a season-low in turnovers, only committing six on the night.
