Andrea Toft (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored two goals, and goalie
Toni Menth (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) collected 40 saves in goal, as Augsburg College claimed a 4-1 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg (2-14-2 overall, 2-7-2 MIAC) built a 4-0 lead early in the third period and claimed the win, despite being outshot by a 41-18 margin by St. Mary's (8-9-1 overall, 5-5-1 MIAC).
Kali Holst (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) had a goal and assist for the Auggies, while
Devon Ellena (FY, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had two assists.
Jess Olson (SR, Delano, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored Augsburg's other goal in the game.
Cassie Stoner (SR, Kenosha, Wis.) had the lone goal of the game for the Cardinals, a goal at the 3:36 mark of the third period from Stevie Fiek (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Julianne Bartosz (FY, Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic HS).
Augsburg jumped on the board early, as Toft scored on a shot from the point at the 5:00 mark of the first period, assisted by
Elise Hedlund (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS). The Auggies struck again at the 9:59 mark, as Holst scored a power-play goal from
Sandra Hinz (FY, Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium HS).
Olson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 12:38 mark of the second period, a power-play marker from Ellena and Holst. Toft finished the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Ellena at the 3:09 mark of the third period.
Menth stopped 40 of the 41 shots she faced in the game, marking the sixth time this season she has recorded 40 or more saves in a game, and the 13th time she has recorded 30 or more saves in her 16 starts this season.
Kaye Collier (FY, Hibbing, Minn.) started in goal for the Cardinals and had 11 saves in 43 minutes of work, with Erin Johnson-Buscemi (JR, Medina, Minn./Orono HS) recording three saves in 13 minutes of relief.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/6) at 4 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
