Auggies claim sweep of Cardinals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night, while Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had a goal and two assists, as Augsburg College completed a series sweep of St. Mary's University with a 4-2 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Nick Guran (SO, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) also scored for Augsburg (13-7-1 overall, 6-5-1 MIAC), which moved into fifth place in the MIAC standings with the victory. Augsburg is in pursuit of its second straight berth in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs, and its third berth in the last four seasons.

Vincent Unklesbay (SO, Maplewood, Minn.) and Anthony Bohn (SR, Spring Hill, Fla.) scored goals for St. Mary's (1-19-1 overall, 1-11-0 MIAC).

St. Mary's scored just 99 seconds into the game, with Unklesbay scoring from Zack Sisk (JR, Pekin, Ill.) and Morgan Shepherd (SR, Brainerd, Minn.). But Augsburg scored three straight goals, including two power-play markers in the first period, to build a 3-1 lead. Johnson scored his first goal of the game, from Sauer and David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS), at the 3:03 mark of the period, and Guran scored from Sauer and Kris Reinthaler (FY, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) at the 14:15 mark.

Johnson put his second goal in the net at the 1:53 mark of the second period, assisted by Mario Mjelleli (JR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) and Jim Jensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS).

Bohn cut the Auggie lead to 3-2 with a goal at the 3:36 mark of the third period, assisted by Tommy Healy (SO, Rolling Meadows, Ill.) and Ben Kitzmiller (JR, Lambertville, Mich.). But Augsburg clinched the win with an empty-net goal by Sauer, assisted by Johnson, at the 19:20 mark.

Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 26-24 margin, with Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) recording 22 saves for the Auggies to pick up the win. Andy Schei (FY, Sun Prairie, Wis.) had 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Both teams are in action in MIAC series next weekend, as Augsburg faces St. Olaf and St. Mary's hosts St. John's.
