BOXSCORE
WAVERLY, Iowa --
Josh Sweeney (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored from
Matt Bowman (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 68th minute, and
Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) claimed his second shutout of the season in goal, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team scored a 1-0 win at Wartburg College in a nonconference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon.
Sweeney, a transfer from Wisconsin-Oshkosh, claimed his first goal as an Auggie with the goal at the 67:47 mark, with Bowman getting his second assist of the season, giving the Auggies a victory over Wartburg, a team that has reached the NCAA Division III national playoffs the last seven years in a row.
"The conditions (wind) affected how we played and so did Wartburg. They have some good players in Luke Prater, Brandon Cook, Josh Palmer, and Kyle McKenna, and they are strong all over the field. I thought early we were sharp, but we got caught up being a little too direct to end the first half and that caused us some issues," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "We did well to settle in again in the second half and kept searching for ideas in the final third, but couldn't quite crack through until Bowman's set piece put Sweeney in for his first goal at Augsburg. It was well taken and cleanly finished off."
Augsburg outshot Wartburg by a 10-7 margin in the game, and both Morlock and Wartburg goalkeeper Brandon Busbee had two saves apiece. Morlock has two shutouts in his first three collegiate starts in goal.
"From that point (Sweeney's goal) forward, we managed the game very well -- a significant improvement from an earlier game. Morlock wasn't tested and distributed well, and the boys stuck together to grab an important road win for our conference," Holker said.
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (9/12) at 2 p.m., hosting Clarke (Iowa) at Edor Nelson Field.
Now we have to eat well, sleep well, and prepare ourselves for a challenging home contest against an improved Clarke team.
