Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) collected 13 saves in goal for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 2-0 decision to the College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Heather Beshears (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored in the first half, and Jess Pellegrene (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) scored in the second half for St. Benedict (4-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC) in the conference-opening game for both teams.
Augsburg (1-2-2 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) was outshot by a 24-9 margin, including a 16-4 margin in the second half, but Bocklund kept the Auggies in the contest with nine second-half saves.
Beshears scored in the 15th minute, taking a centering pass from Colleen Bouchard (FY, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) and depositing it in the goal. Pellegrene scored in the 63rd minute, putting home a rebound from Emily Willaert (SR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato Loyola HS) off a free kick.
Beshears had six shots to lead all players, while Willaert had four shots. For Augsburg,
Carly Reimer (SO, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS),
Kelsey Sorensen (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had two shots each.
Maija Schmelzer (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had four saves in goal for St. Benedict.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday(9/18), with Augsburg hosting St. Thomas at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, and St. Benedict hosting St. Olaf at 1 p.m.
