COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at St. John's University on Wednesday afternoon at Durenberger Field.
Elliott Olson scored an unassisted goal following a corner kick in the 32nd minute, the lone goal of the game for St. John's (2-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC), which snapped a stretch of scoreless minutes allowed by Augsburg of 346:28, covering parts of five games.
"Their goal came on our inability to clear a corner kick high, far, and wide," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "We have knocked three down on the floor straight up the field and two of those have ended up in our goal (Whitworth). This is a painful way to concede, because I think our defending overall is quite strong."
Augsburg (4-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) outshot St. John's by a 16-10 mark, and the Johnnies had just two shots on goal in the game. Goalkeeper
Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) had one save for Augsburg, while Johnnie goalkeeper Matt Anderson had seven saves.
For the Auggies,
Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had three shots, while
Joe Keller (SR, Wayzata, Minn.) and
Ahmed Gobana (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) had two shots apiece.
"I think the more important question is why didn't we score -- and it's because we play too slowly. We are very good on the ball and content to string together sequences of passes that ooh and ah each other, but have very little bite at the end. We all have to look at ourselves and determine what is more important -- looking good, or winning," Holker said. "By playing slowly, we allowed St. John's to get 10 players behind the ball in a blockade. When we were able to break them down, our service didn't come in a timely manner or the finishing touch missed."
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/18) at 1 p.m. with a game at St. Thomas.
"Congrats to John Haws and St. John's for grinding out a win today. Unfortunately, about the only moment I enjoyed was after the game watching Pat (Haws, former SJU coach) and John embrace. That was a cool moment," Holker said. "I am glad this happened tonight. It is early enough to awaken this program, clarifying what needs to be improved."
