MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home-opener to St. Mary's University on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall. Despite jumping out to early leads in the first two sets, Augsburg (6-7 overall, 0-1 MIAC) was unable to hold off the No. 24-ranked Cardinals (8-2 overall, 1-0 MIAC) in the three-set loss (21-25, 18-25, 15-25).
Augsburg was led offensively by
Katie Christensen (SR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and
Jamila Lee (SO, Richfield, Minn.), who each recorded six kills in the match.
Emily McCourt (FY, Sun Prairie, Wis.) was credited with 19 assists.
Nikolene Miller (SO, Tomahawk, Wis.) recorded a match-high six blocks (two solo), while Lee had four blocks.
Jessica Hilk (SR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) and Christensen had nine digs each, with
Amy Jo Opsal (JR, North Mankato, Minn./St. Clair HS) each recording eight digs.
Sarah Gardner (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had 13 kills and eight digs to lead the Cardinals, while Amy Kujak (JR, River Falls, Wis.) had six kills and two blocks. Jessica Mate (SR, St. Charles, Ill.) recorded 11 digs, and Brittany Cherwinka (SR, Faribault, Minn.) had 26 assists, four kills and four digs.
The Auggies are off until Monday (9/20) at 7 p.m., when they host Crown College in a non-conference game at Si Melby Hall.
