Auggies fall to first-place Blazers

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to the College of St. Benedict, 25-12, 25-10, 25-21, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.

After falling behind early in the first two sets, the Auggies (8-8 overall, 1-2 MIAC) rallied in the third set and pulled within three points at 22-19, but were unable to get any closer.

The St. Benedict (10-6 overall, 3-0 MIAC) front-line dominated the match statistically, recording 41 kills and 24 blocks, to 21 kills and 10 blocks for the Auggies.

Augsburg outside hitters Amanda Unze (SO, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) and Colleen Ourada (FY, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) each recorded a team-high five kills in the match, while Augsburg setter Emily McCourt (FY, Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded 16 assists for the Auggies.

Three Auggies recorded double-digit dig totals, led by Jessica Hilk (SR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) with 25.  Katelyn Berens (FY, Jordan, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Lauren Butler (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) recorded 16 and 13 digs respectively.

The Blazers were led offensively by Chelsie Sobieck (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forrest Lake HS) and Lexi Alm (FY, Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake HS) who recorded 10 and nine kills each. Setter Kathyrn Gaydos (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 35 assists in the match, while Calleigh Brown (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) and Shannon Bassett (SO, Eagan, Minn.) recorded six blocks each.

Augsburg is off until Wednesday (9/30) when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to face conference foe Gustavus Adolphus College. The Auggies next home contest will be on Oct. 5 in a nonconference game against Wisconsin-Stout. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
