MINNEAPOLIS --
Ahmed Gobana (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and
Peter Loyd (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies tied St. Olaf College 2-2 in two overtimes in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Despite outshooting St. Olaf by a 30-16 margin, Augsburg (7-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC) had to rally for the victory, as St. Olaf (3-4-3 overall, 1-1-2 MIAC) took the lead with two goals in the second half.
But just 45 seconds after the Oles took the lead, Augsburg tied the game at the 70:12 mark on Loyd's goal, a conversion off a free kick by
Josh Sweeney (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).
The Auggies had several chances to score down the stretch, but St. Olaf goalkeeper Harry Ullmann (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn.) came up with 11 saves to preserve the tie.
"Our response to their second goal was quick and authoritative, and from that point forward I thought we were going to steal three points," said Augsburg coach
Greg Holker. "Their goalkeeper came up huge on at least three occasions, keeping the winner out of the net."
Augsburg took the early lead in the 22nd minute, as Gobana scored his first goal of the season, off a centering pass by
Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).
"Gobana's goal was well-taken -- one of the rare good moments in the first half," Holker said.
St. Olaf tied the game 50 seconds into the second half, as Adam Hadro (FY, Northfield, Minn.) rebounded a free kick by John Zietlow (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) that hit the crossbar. Mohamed Haji (SO, Owatonna, Minn.) gave the Oles the lead in the 70th minute, scoring on a feed by Isaac Tut (SR, Northfield, Minn.).
"Zietlow hammered a free kick off the crossbar and Hadro cleaned it up, but that was because we committed way too many fouls. We gave them chances because of slow, disinterested individual and team defending," Holker said. "St. Olaf deserved more. They outworked us from the opening whistle, and I think each of our guys is as disappointed in their effort as much as the dropped points."
Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) collected two saves in goal for Augsburg.
Both teams return to action on Saturday (10/2). Augsburg plays a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Superior at 2 p.m., while St. Olaf hosts Gustavus in a MIAC contest at 1 p.m.
