Landon Olson (SO, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies claimed a 2-2, overtime tie with Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 34 saves in goal for Augsburg (8-4-2 overall, 2-2-1 MIAC). The Auggies are now 6-1-1 in their last eight games.
Mitch Carlson (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Zach May (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) scored second-period goals for Gustavus (9-5-2 overall, 3-2-2 MIAC), ranked No. 13 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll. Josh Swartout (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) collected 25 saves in goal for the Gusties.
Olson opened the scoring for the Auggies with his first collegiate goal, assisted by
John Lennartson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.), at the 13:49 mark of the first period.
The Auggies claimed a 2-0 lead at the 7:23 mark of the second period, as Sauer scored his ninth goal of the season, assisted by
Scott Eberline (FY, Novi, Mich.) and
Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS).
With nine goals and 13 assists, Sauer now has 22 points on the season, tied for the points lead among MIAC players in overall statistics. Sauer currently ranks 15th in points per-game (1.57) nationally among NCAA Division III men's hockey players, according to the
Collegehockeystats.net national statistics.
Carlson scored from Ross Ring-Jarvi (JR, Anoka, Minn.) and Shael Hechter (FY, Winnipeg, Manitoba) at the 9:34 mark of the second period, and the Gusties tied the game on May's goal from Tim LaBombard (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Andrew Peterson (SO, Reno, Nev.) at the 16:35 mark.
Gustavus outshot the Auggies by a 36-27 margin, but the Auggies outshot the Gusties by a 13-8 mark in the third period and overtime.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/15) at 7 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
