Schmidt shines in Auggie win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) scored 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 63-55 victory over St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) collected his second double-double of the saeson with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while contributing four assists for Augsburg (10-4 overall, 5-4 MIAC), and Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Auggies claimed their third win in a row and fifth win in their last six games.

St. John's (6-7 overall, 2-6 MIAC) was led by Aaron Burtzel (SR, Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), who had 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, with 10 rebounds and four steals.

Trailing 28-26 at halftime, the Auggies used a 9-0 run over the opening 4:35 of the second half, with Grzesiak-Grimm scoring four points, to take a 35-28 lead. But a 7-0 run by the Johnnies tied the score at 35-35 two minutes later. The Auggies then responded with a 15-5 run, with Schmidt scoring eight points in the stretch, to take the lead for good at 50-40 with 7:56 left. Augsburg's lead did not slip below four points the rest of the way.

Schmidt scored his 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored nine points, as did Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS), who hit a three-pointer to extend his streak of hitting at least one three-pointer to 18 straight games dating to last season.

Aaron Barmore (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Andy Burns (JR, Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and Kyle Zimmerman (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had eight points apiece for St. John's, with Burns contributing five assists and a steal.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Monday (1/17) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and St. John's hosting St. Mary's.
