MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring three goals in the first 7:37 of the third period, the Augsburg College women's hockey team gained its first victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Finlandia University (Mich.) in a nonconference contest on Sunday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Nicole Gorr (FY, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South HS),
Jenna Knudtson (SR, Austin, Minn.) and
Erin Leyden (SR, Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS) scored goals for Augsburg (1-8-1 overall) in the first victory for new Augsburg head coach
Michelle McAteer.
Robin Stockwell (FY, Chelsea, Mich.) scored a third-period goal for Finlandia (0-9-0 overall), which was outshot by a 28-26 margin by the Auggies.
After a scoreless first two periods, where both teams had 18 shots on goal, Augsburg jumped on the scoreboard early and often in the opening minutes of the final frame. Gorr scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by
Allix Bell (SO, Andover, Minn./Anoka HS), at the 2:18 mark. Knudtson followed up with a power-play goal from
Katie Lamirande (SO, Cloquet, Minn.) at the 5:51 mark, and Leyden finished the Auggie scoring with a goal from
Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) at the 7:37 mark.
Stockwell scored for the Lions at the 14:45 mark of the third period, assisted by Mariah Mumford (JR, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and Kelly Poelstra (SO, Baltimore, Ontario).
Augsburg goalie
Alex Hall (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) earned her first collegiate victory with a 25-save effort. Ashley Pavlish (SO, East Grand Forks, Minn.) had 23 saves for Finlandia, with Molly Mandoli (FY, Appleton, Wis.) collecting two saves in relief in the third period.
The teams complete the nonconference series on Monday (1/3) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
