Auggies edged 2-1 by Cobbers

GAME BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Trevor Doden (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) scored a goal late in the third period for Augsburg College, but his Auggie men's hockey team was unable to get the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Nick Thielen (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) and Pat Deitz (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) scored first-period goals for Concordia (7-8-3 overall, 3-3-3 MIAC) in the opener of the weekend series.

Augsburg (8-6-2 overall, 2-4-1 MIAC) outshot Concordia by a 32-26 margin, including a 13-6 margin in the third period, but Cobber goalie Kelly Andrew (FY, Calgary, Alberta) stopped 31 shots to claim the win.

Augsburg goalie Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) relieved starter Jon Zitur (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) in the second period and stopped all 16 shots he faced. Zitur had eight saves in the first period.

The Cobbers' eventual game-winning goal came literally in the last second of the first period. Augsburg was called for a penalty with eight-tenths of a second left in the period, and on the ensuing faceoff to the right of the Augsburg net, Deitz fired a shot as he won the draw and found the goal as the buzzer sounded.

Thielen scored the opening goal for the Cobbers on the power play, assisted by Erick Galt (JR, Fargo, N.D.), at the 11:36 mark of the first period.

Augsburg also scored on the power play, as Doden pocketed his third goal of the season, assisted by Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) and Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) at the 16:44 mark of the third period.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/22) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
