Late run gives UST win over Auggies

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored a season-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, but his Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped an 82-66 decision to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena.

Augsburg (11-6 overall, 6-6 MIAC) trailed just 59-56 with 10:08 left to play, but St. Thomas (16-1 overall, 11-1 MIAC), the No. 8-ranked team in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, outscored Augsburg by a 23-10 margin over the last 9:30 to score the victory.

Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) connected on 5-of-5 from three-point range to score 15 points for the Auggies, while Anthony Humphrey (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) scored nine points, Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored eight points with three assists, and Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) had seven points with five rebounds.

Tyler Nicolai scored 20 points -- including 13 points in the game-ending 23-10 run -- to lead the Tommies, while Teddy Archer had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Anders Halvorsen scored 12 points with four rebounds, and Tommy Hannon scored 11 points with five rebounds and four asssists.

Augsburg hit 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, to keep the game close at halftime, trailing just 37-34. Flavin scored 16 first-half points for the Auggies on 5-of-6 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range.

However, St. Thomas outscored Augsburg 45-32 in the second half and hit 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field, compared to 44.0 percent (11-of-25) for the Auggies. The Tommies also outrebounded Augsburg 19-12 in the second half, en route to a 38-21 advantage in the game.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/29) at 3 p.m., hosting Carleton at Si Melby Hall.
