Auggies hang tough with Tommies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lexi Thompson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored a career-high 18 points while pulling down six rebounds, but her Augsburg College women's basketball team dropped a 73-62 decision to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

Jordan Feis (FY, Truman, Minn.) scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field for Augsburg (4-13 overall, 3-11 MIAC), while Nikki Borkhuis (JR, Watertown, S.D.) claimed a season-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points.

St. Thomas (12-4 overall, 11-2 MIAC) had four players score in double figures, as Taylor Young (FY, Edina, Minn.) and Maggie Weiers (FY, New Prague, Minn.) had 16 points apiece, with Weiers adding a team-best nine rebounds. Rachel Booth (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Carolyn Dienhart (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had 11 points and five assists. Dienhart connected on three 3-pointers in the game.

Augsburg claimed a 30-29 lead at halftime, but a 13-4 run over the first 7:21 of the second half gave the Tommies the lead for good. Weiers scored eight straight points to give the Tommies a 42-34 lead with 12:39 left in the game, and St. Thomas led by as many as 14 points down the stretch.

Augsburg stayed in the game with a strong rebounding performance, claiming a 46-39 advantage on the glass, including a 24-15 margin in the first half.

Serenae Levine (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored nine points with six rebounds and four assists for the Auggies, while Brittany Zins (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had seven points, five rebounds and two steals. Tracee Schrank (SO, Reedsburg, Wis.) scored five points with five rebounds and two assists.

For St. Thomas, Jazmin Townsend (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) claimed eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/29), as Augsburg hosts Carleton at 1 p.m. and St. Thomas hosts Bethel at 7:30 p.m.
