ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Brandon Bukowski (JR, Superior, Wis.) and
John Lennartson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored goals for Augsburg College, but No. 11-ranked Hamline University used a three-goal first period to secure a 5-2 win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at the Warner Coliseum.
Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) had two assists for Augsburg (8-8-2 overall, 2-6-1 MIAC), which was outshot 33-32 by Hamline (12-3-3 overall, 7-0-2 MIAC), the No. 11-ranked team in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll.
Hamline scored three goals in the first period to take a lead it would not relinquish, with Cory Belisle scoring an unassisted goal, Chris Berenguer scoring a power-play goal and Austun Tavis scoring a shorthanded tally.
The Auggies began their comeback at the 6:13 mark of the second period, as Bukowski scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by Guran and
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS).
Lennartson cut the lead to 3-2 with his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Guran, at the 6:14 mark of the third period. But the Pipers expanded their lead just 54 seconds later, as Brian Arrigoni scored at the 7:08 mark. An empty-net goal by Ryan Kupperman capped the scoring.
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 28 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Beau Christian claimed 30 saves for Hamline.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/29) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
