Auggies score 2-1 win over Pipers

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nicole Gorr (FY, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South HS) and Carissa Miller (SO, Woodbury, Minn.) scored first-period goals, as the Augsburg College women's hockey team scored a 2-1 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Alex Hall (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) collected 30 saves in goal for the victory for Augsburg (3-10-1 overall, 1-7-1 MIAC), which gained its first conference victory for first-year head coach Michelle McAteer.

Haley Johnson (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) scored late in the first period for Hamline (2-10-3 overall, 1-6-2 MIAC), with goalie Nicole Jones (JR, Mora, Minn.) stopping 24 shots.

Gorr put the Auggies on the scoreboard at the 10:12 mark of the first period with her second goal of the season, assisted by Carissa Miller (SO, Woodbury, Minn.) and Jess Geisinger (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS).

The Auggies took a 2-0 lead at the 18:44 mark of the opening stanza, as Miller claimed her first goal of the year, assisted by Erica Berthold (SO, Issaquah, Wash.) and Gorr. The Pipers answered 52 seconds later, with Johnson scoring from Billye Nelson (JR, Warroad, Minn.).

But the Auggie defense held firm the rest of the way, as Hall stopped all 17 shots she faced in the final two periods to record her second collegiate victory. Hamline outshot Augsburg by a 31-26 margin.

The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday (1/29) at 7 p.m. at the Warner Coliseum on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul.
