Auggies score big OT win over Knights

MINNEAPOLIS -- Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) scored 14 points with eight rebounds and three blocked shots, leading Augsburg College in a 58-55 overtime victory over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored 10 points with seven rebounds and two steals for the Auggies (12-6 overall, 7-6 MIAC). Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had nine points, including four free throws in the final 1:04 of overtime to help clinch the win for the Auggies.

Carleton (11-7 overall, 10-3 MIAC) was paced by Seth Jonker, who scored 14 points, and Jeremy Sutherland, who had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Auggies overcame an early 14-4 deficit with an 15-4 run over an 11-minute span midway through the first half, taking a 19-18 lead with 4:13 left. Grzesiak-Grimm had six points in the Auggie run.

Tied 23-23 at halftime, Augsburg used a 15-2 run over the opening 5:57 of the second half to take their largest lead of the game, 40-25 with 14:03 left in regulation. Polta scored eight points in the Auggie run. But Carleton crawled back into the game, outscoring Augsburg 19-5 over the final 12:21 to tie the game and force overtime.

The Knights took a 55-53 lead on a jumper by Jonker with 37 seconds left in the extra session, but Augsburg's Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) hit a three-pointer to put the Auggies ahead 56-55 with 25 seconds left. After the Knights missed a three-pointer, Flavin claimed a defensive rebound and was fouled, hitting two free throws with seven seconds left to clinch the win.

Flavin had nine points with seven assists for the Auggies, while Andy Seidlitz (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored nine points with two steals. Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) had seven points and five rebounds.

Caleb Rosenow came off the bench to contribute eight points and eight rebounds for Carleton, while Tom Sawatzke scored seven points with four rebounds.

Augsburg returns to action on Monday (1/31) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Hamline at Si Melby Hall. Carleton is idle on Monday and returns to action on Wednesday (2/2) at 7:30 p.m., traveling to face St. John's.
