BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- #O.P. Marcellino# (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and
Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies claimed a 2-2, two-overtime tie with the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Marcellino scored his first goal of the season on a shot to the goal following a free kick by
Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the sixth minute. Augsburg (8-4-2 overall) drew a penalty kick in the 55th minute, which
Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) converted for his second goal of the season.
But Wisconsin-Superior (9-5-2 overall) rallied back to tie the game and force overtime. Chase Carey (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) headed home a free kick from Logan George (SR, Ramsey, Minn.) in the 66th minute, and in the 79th minute, a free kick from midfield by Eric Nilsen (SR, Duluth, Minn.) was deflected into the goal on a punch-out attempt, tying the game.
"We can't commit 15 fouls and not expect to be punished on a free kick. However, to be punished twice for the second time in six days is extremely concerning," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Clearly it shows us that everyone else must improve in this area when
Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) is not in the game. The first goal was a bigger issue than the second because we didn't track Chase Carey and he ran free into the service for an easy finish."
Augsburg outshot the Yellowjackets by an 18-9 margin, including a 5-1 advantage in overtime.
"
Matt Knutson (FY, Burnsville, Minn.),
Tanner McCarthy (FY, Windsor Heights, Iowa/West Des Moines Dowling HS) and
Sherif Soud (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) made positive contributions tonight and that is promising. We are getting some good quality from players who have grown a lot this season," Holker said. "On the flip side, we are not getting what we need from our more veteran players. Clearly this has something to do with me and the psychology of the team."
Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had two saves in goal in regulation for the Auggies.
Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) played in goal for the Auggies in overtime. Matt Elder (FY, New Hope, Minn.) had four saves in goal for Wisconsin-Superior.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (10/21) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Hamline at Edor Nelson Field. The Auggies have three conference games remaining in the regular season, pursuing a berth in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.
"With Hamline on Friday, we enter a stretch that is essentially a playoff -- every game moving forward determines if we keep playing or not," Holker said.
