BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's soccer team remains in the hunt for back-to-back berths in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs, after a 0-0, two-overtime tie with Concordia College-Moorhead on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
With the draw, Augsburg (9-4-3 overall, 5-3-1 MIAC) has 16 league points, two points behind fourth-place Macalester (10-7-0 overall, 6-3-0 MIAC, 18 points) in the conference's point system -- which awards three points for a win and one for a tie. Saturday's (10/29) games will determine the final spot in the four-team playoffs, as Carleton (7-1-1 MIAC, 22 points), Gustavus (6-1-2 MIAC, 20 points) and St. Olaf (6-2-1 MIAC, 19 points) have already locked up playoff berths.
For the Auggies to clinch a playoff berth for the fourth time in a six-year span, Augsburg must win at St. Mary's on Saturday (3:30 p.m.), while Macalester must either lose or tie at Gustavus (1 p.m.). Should Augsburg and Macalester tie with 19 points, the Auggies would clinch the fourth playoff spot based on Augsburg's 1-0 win at Macalester on Sept. 21. Should there be a three-way tie at 19 points (with St. Olaf losing to Carleton on Saturday), St. Olaf and Augsburg would clinch playoff berths based on tiebreaker criteria (head-to-head among all three teams -- St. Olaf won over both Augsburg and Macalester, and Augsburg beating Macalester).
"We just helped Gustavus and St. Olaf clinch playoff spots, making it very difficult for us to get in," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "More important, we have to play well on Saturday and win the game at St. Mary's. Everything else is out of our control."
In Wednesday's game, Augsburg claimed a 33-9 shot advantage over Concordia (13-3 in shots-on-goal) and had 18 corner kicks to Concordia's four, but could not get past Cobber goalkeeper Peter Runquist (SO, Woodbury, Minn.), who had 10 saves. Augsburg had one shot hit the goalpost in the 13th minute, and had one shot in the second half and back-to-back shots in the second overtime saved from going in the net by Cobber defenders.
"That was an incredible performance from Peter Runquist, and his teammates when we got it past him," Holker said. "No one can question the effort of our guys -- they gave everything they had in the attack. One issue has been our lack of goal scoring from set pieces this season, particularly corner kicks. We had 18 in the game and, although we were threatening on more than 50 percent of them, we have nothing to show for it."
Augsburg goalkeeper
Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) had two saves in the game to earn his fifth shutout of the season and 13th in his 22 career games. Morlock is currently third in school history with his 13 career shutouts.
Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn.) had five shots for the Auggies, while
Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) and
Tanner McCarthy (FY, Windsor Heights, Iowa/West Des Moines Dowling HS) had four shots apiece.
The game was the final home contest at Edor Nelson Field for six Augsburg seniors --
Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.),
Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.),
Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS),
Max Macemon (SR, St. Anthony Village, Minn./Agriculture and Food Sciences Academy),
Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) and
David Scheller (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.).
"I would have liked for our seniors to have played in a win in their last game at Edor Nelson Field, but they can walk away knowing they were 26-7-4 (.757 winning percentage) during their career on this field. That's pretty impressive," Holker said.
