Auggies open season with 3-2 win

BLAINE, Minn. -- Rallying from a 2-1, second-period deficit, the Augsburg College men's hockey team claimed a 3-2, season-opening victory over Bethel University at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase event at Fogerty Arena on Friday evening.

Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 19:19 mark of the second period for Augsburg (1-0 overall). David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) had a goal and assist, and Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had the other Auggie goal.

Augsburg outshot Bethel (0-1 overall) by a 32-23 margin, including a 24-14 advantage through the first two periods. Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 21 saves in goal for the Auggies. Dan Harper had 20 saves in goal for Bethel.

Augsburg opened the scoring at the 7:25 mark of the first period, as Hines scored from #J.P. Perpich# (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). But Bethel scored twice in the second period to take the lead.

McClellan tied the game with a power-play marker, his first collegiate goal, at the 15:57 mark of the second period, assisted by Hines. Doden gave the Auggies the lead with 41 seconds left in the second period, assisted by Scott Eberline (SO, Novi, Mich.) and Jamison Wicks (FY, Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS).

Augsburg returns to action at the MIAC Showcase on Sunday (10/30) at 4 p.m., facing Hamline at Fogerty Arena.
