HANCOCK, Mich. -- With all four goals coming from players in their first collegiate women's hockey games, Augsburg College opened its 2011-12 season with a 4-4, overtime tie with host Finlandia University in a nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.
Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) scored twice in the third period to give the Auggies the tie with Finlandia in the opening game of the season for both teams.
Casey Miller (FY, Bemidji, Minn.) and
Sara Rajewsky (FY, Murdock, Minn./Benson HS), Hennessy's linemates, had a goal and assist apiece.
Mariah Matthys scored two goals for Finlandia, while
Casey Miller had a goal and assist, Kelly Poelstra also scored for the Lions.
Trailing 1-0 on a Matthys power-play goal late in the first period, Augsburg scored twice in a 1:54 span to take the lead in the second period. Rajewsky scored a power-play goal from Miller and
Jessica Larkin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at the 12:07 mark, and Miller scored an unassisted goal at the 14:01 mark.
Finlandia took the lead back with goals from Poelstra and Matthys in a 53-second span early in the third period, but Augsburg tied the game on Hennessy's first goal, an unassisted marker at the 5:04 mark. Finlandia took the lead again on a goal from Coleman at the 11:12 mark, but Augsburg tied the game 90 seconds later, as Hennessy scored from Rajewsky and
Jeanna Dudley (JR, Lindenhurst, Minn./Lakes Community HS).
Augsburg outshot Finlandia by a 32-26 margin.
Alex Hall (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) claimed the tie for the Auggies in goal with 22 saves, while Stephanie LaMore had 28 saves in goal for Finlandia.
The teams complete the season-opening series on Sunday (10/30) at 1 p.m. (Central time) at Finlandia.
