Auggies fall 1-0 to Carleton

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring a goal off a steal in the 83rd minute, Carleton College claimed a 1-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a battle of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer leaders on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Simon Ginet (SO, Arlington, Mass.) stole the ball from an Augsburg defender, sprinted to the goal and scored from 20 yards out for his first goal of the season with 7:20 left in the game.

Augsburg (8-2-1 overall, 4-1-0 MIAC) had outshot Carleton (7-3-2 overall, 4-0-1 MIAC) by a 13-6 margin, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half, in the battle of two of the top teams in the MIAC. The loss snapped an 17-game home unbeaten streak (16-0-1) for Augsburg, dating to the 2009 season.

Carleton goalkeeper James Neher (SO, Mahtomedi, Minn.) collected five saves for the win, while Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) took the loss, claiming three saves.

"Their goal was created by a combination of good defensive pressure and us making an error on the ball. It was a good finish -- he tucked it just past Lynch's feet to the far post." said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "It's our first loss in the last 18 games at home, but at some point that streak had to end."

Augsburg controlled possession in the first half, but was unable to score on Neher, who had five first-half saves. Both teams had four shots in the second half, and Augsburg claimed a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-2 edge in the second half.

"We were dangerous the entire first half, but did not put the game away when we had the chance," Holker said. "They made some great adjustments at halftime, and we didn't respond the way we would have liked moving forward."

Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) had three shots for the Auggies, while Josh Sweeney (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS), Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had two shots each.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/12) at 4 p.m. with a game at St. Olaf.

"We have to move forward and take points from our next game, which will be an even more difficult task at St. Olaf," Holker said. "They have been bombarding their opponent's goal lately and have incredibly dangerous players. The MIAC is one of the toughest conferences in the country. No game is easy, and that's why we love playing in it as much as we do."
