Auggies score OT win over CSB

BOXSCORE

DELANO, Minn. -- Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) scored her team-high 12th goal of the season with 1:03 left in overtime, giving the Augsburg College women's hockey team a 2-1 win over the College of St. Benedict in a nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Delano Area Sports Arena.

Hennessy scored from Erica Berthold (JR, Issaquah, Wash.) and Jeanna Dudley (JR, Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community HS) at the 3:57 mark of overtime for Augsburg. Sandra Hinz (JR, Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium HS) put the Auggies on the board with a shorthanded goal, her first goal of the season, at the 17:25 mark of the first period, assisted by Dudley.

With the win, Augsburg improves to 4-4-1 on the season, eclipsing last season's win total of three (3-19-1). St. Benedict is now 3-6-2 overall.

With her game-winning goal, Hennessy now has 12 goals on the season in just nine games -- already the most goals in a single season for an Auggie since Tiffany Magnuson had 12 goals in the 2007-08 campaign. Augsburg's single-season school record for goals is 27, set by Angie Rieger in the 1999-200 season.

Hennessy's 12 goals are currently tied for third nationally among NCAA Division III women's hockey players nationally, through games over the weekend. Her 12 goals are the most among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players, and her 1.33 goals per-game is currently second-best nationally.

Augsburg was outshot by a 37-19 margin in the game, with Brianna Schulz (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) recording 36 saves in a winning effort. It's the third time Schulz has recorded 35-plus saves in her six games this season.

Schulz withstood a barrage of Blazer shots in the second and third periods, as the Blazers outshot the Auggies by a 28-10 margin in the final two periods of regulation.

St. Benedict tied the game at the 8:00 mark of the third period, when Kerri Graske (SR, Stillwater, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Erika Zoe Costello (FY, Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) and Katelyn Bounds (SR, Anchorage, Alaska/Bartlett HS).

Jenna Traut (FY. St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) had 17 saves in goal for the Blazers.

Both teams are now idle for the holiday break. Augsburg returns to action with a series at Marian (Wis.) on Jan. 7-8. The game on Saturday, Jan. 7 is at 7 p.m., in Waupun, Wis., and the game on Sunday, Jan. 8 is at 2 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis. St. Benedict returns to action with a game at Salve Regina (N.H.) on Jan. 6 at 12 p.m.
