Lennartson scores 4 in Auggie 9-4 win

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored a career-high four goals to lead Augsburg College to a 9-4 victory over Lawrence University (Wis.) in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Augsburg's Ed Saugestad Rink.

The four goals were the most for an Augsburg player since Dan Carlson scored four goals in a 6-3 Auggie win over Concordia-Moorhead on Feb. 8, 2008. It was the third multi-goal game and seventh multi-point game of Lennartson's Auggie career.

Thirteen different Augsburg (4-6-0 overall) players figured in the scoring in the victory, as the Auggies scored their most goals in a single game since a 9-3 win at St. Mary's on Feb. 14, 2009.

Augsburg's Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) and Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) had two goals apiece, with Doden adding an assist. #J.P. Perpich# (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a goal and an assist, and David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) had three assists.

In his first collegiate game in goal, John Bretzman (FY, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) collected 32 saves for the win for the Auggies.

For Lawrence (4-5-3 overall), Brad Scurfield (JR, Midland, Mich.) had a goal and an assist, and Matt Hughes (SR, Goodrich, Mich), Patrick Coyne (FY, Murrysville, Pa.) and Ben DiMarco (SR, Galveston, Texas) scored goals, and Gustav Lindgren (FY, Stockholm, Sweden) had two assists.

The Auggies pulled away with seven goals in the final two periods, including four straight goals in the last period-and-a-half. Augsburg outshot Lawrence by a 45-36 margin, including a 34-19 margin in the final two periods.

Lawrence opened the scoring at the 2:42 mark of the first period with Hughes' eighth goal of the season, but Augsburg took a 2-1 lead on Lennartson's first goal of the game, assisted by Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) at the 4:16 mark, and Doden's first goal, a power-play marker from Wesley Waytashek (SO, Little Falls, Minn.) and Perpich at the 11:34 mark.

Lawrence tied the game early in the second period on Coyne's even-strength goal, but two Auggie goals gave the hosts the lead for good. Perpich scored from Hines and George Jackson (FY, Sweickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS) at the 3:46 mark, and Lennartson scored his second goal, fed by Doden and Hines, at the 7:31 mark.

Scurfield cut the Auggie advantage to 4-3 with his goal at the 9:53 mark of the second period, but two more Auggie goals led to a 6-3 second-period lead -- Lennartson's third goal for the hat trick from Landon Olson (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS), and Paine's first collegiate goal in his first Auggie game, assisted by Niklas Almstrom (SO, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Waytashek, at the 18:41 mark.

Paine scored his second collegiate goal 2:07 into the third period, assisted by Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Erik Ordahl (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), and Lennartson notched his fourth goal of the game, fed by Brandon Bukowski (SR, Superior, Wis.) and Hines, at the 6:35 mark.

DiMarco scored for Lawrence at the 9:36 mark of the third period, and Doden capped the scoring with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, an unassisted marker at the 17:39 mark.

Adam Eno (FY, Beloit, Wis.) had 29 saves for Lawrence, with Anton Olsson (FY, Stromstad, Sweden) collecting seven saves in relief in the third period.

The teams complete the nonconference series on Saturday (12/31) at 4 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
