Auggies claim 4-2 win over Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Scoring three goals in the first period, the Augsburg College men's hockey team claimed a key 4-2 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at the Northfield Ice Arena.

Ten different Augsburg (11-8-3 overall, 5-6-2 MIAC) players figured in the scoring, as the Auggies took sole possession of fifth place in the MIAC standings with 12 points. The top five teams will qualify for the MIAC's postseason playoffs in two weeks.

Augsburg jumped on the scoreboard early against St. Olaf (9-9-4 overall, 3-6-4 MIAC). John Lennartson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored a power-play goal from Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) and Brandon Bukowski (JR, Superior, Wis.) 2:29 into the first period, while Tedd Falk (JR, Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS) scored from Cory Ellertson (SR, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Nikki Holt (SR, Hermantown, Minn.) at the 10:13 mark.

Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored his 13th goal of the season from David Hines (JR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) at the 17:42 mark of the period. Sauer now has a team-leading 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists) on the season, a total that leads the MIAC's overall statistics, according to the Collegehockeystats.net website. Teammate Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) is tied for second with 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists).

Erik Morrow put the Oles on the board with a goal from Isak Tranvik and Peter Rohn with one second remaining in the second period, but the Auggies regained their three-goal advantage with an unassisted goal from Trevor Doden (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) midway through the third period. Aaron Molstad closed the scoring for the Oles from Austin Wetmore and Tranvik at the 13:52 mark of the final frame.

Augsburg outshot the Oles by a 38-31 margin. Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 29 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Ben Leis had 34 saves for St. Olaf.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/12) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
