Tedd Falk (JR, Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS) scored two goals with an assist, leading Augsburg College to a 5-3 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) and
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had a goal and assist apiece for Augsburg (12-8-3 overall, 6-6-2 MIAC), which claimed its fourth straight victory and extended its unbeaten streak to five straight games (4-0-1).
With the sweep of the weekend series, Augsburg secured its hold on fifth place in the MIAC standings with 14 league points, with one weekend to go in the regular season. The top five teams in the standings qualify for the MIAC's postseason playoffs.
Peter Rohn (JR, Vettre, Norway) scored two goals and Isak Tranvik (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn.) had two assists for St. Olaf (9-10-4 overall, 3-7-4 MIAC).
For the second straight night, a three-goal outburst gave the Auggies an advantage they would not relinquish. Falk scored twice in the second period -- at the 2:44 mark and 16:09 mark -- and Sauer added his 14th goal of the season at the 16:51 mark.
Rohn put the Oles on the board first with a goal just 84 seconds into the game, assisted by Tranvik, but Augsburg tied the game with Guran's 17th goal of the season, assisted by
Scott Eberline (FY, Novi, Mich.) and Sauer, at the 16:08 mark of the first period.
Sauer now has 34 points -- 14 points and a conference-high 20 assists -- to stand in first place in the conference's overall statistics in total points,
according to the Collegehockeystats.net website. Guran stands third in the conference with 31 points, including 17 goals -- the second-most in the conference.
Falk put the Auggies ahead early in the third period, assisted by
Trevor Tolibas (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) and
John Lennartson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.), and he added his second goal, from Lennartson, at the 16:09 mark. Sauer's goal was assisted by
Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) and Guran.
The Oles cut the lead to 4-3 with two goals in a 24-second span midway through the third period, as Justin Thomas (JR, Belmont, Calif.) and Tranvik, and Rohn scored from Charlie Raskob (JR, Hastings, Minn.) and Derek Grogan (JR, Eagan, Minn.). But Augsburg clinched the win with a
Trevor Doden (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) empty-net, power-play goal with 31 seconds left, assisted by Falk and
David Hines (JR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS).
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 29-28 margin, with
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) claiming 25 saves for the Auggies to pick up the win. Nick Krauss (SR, Naperville, Ill.) took the loss for the Oles in goal with 24 saves.
Both teams finish the regular season next weekend, with Augsburg facing Bethel and St. Olaf facing St. John's.
