Auggies open with 1-0 win

BOXSCORE GAME BOXSCORE

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half, giving the Augsburg College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference contest on Thursday afternoon at Northwestern.

Muyres was fouled on a run in the penalty box just before halftime, then converted the penalty kick for the lone goal of the season-opening game for both teams.

Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) collected three saves, including a few key saves in the second half, to earn her fourth career shutout in the win over Northwestern, winners of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoff title and a participant in the NCAA Division III national tournament in 2010.

"We played a lot of players, including many first-years, and for the most part they did well, which is encouraging," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre, who earned his 98th career victory (98-87-31) in his 13th-season debut. "We've had a strong preseason and were looking to be more dynamic today, but we still had most of the play and should feel good about beating a veteran team that qualified for the national tournament last year."

The game was played in warm and humid conditions in the Twin Cities on Thursday.

"I thought we were a little off today which was disappointing, but ultimately we got the job done. Northwestern is also a good team and they did well to take us out of our rhythm," Navarre said. "Now we have to find some air conditioning and prepare for another tough away game on Saturday versus Grinnell, whom I'm sure will be ready to play."

Augsburg will face Grinnell College, a Midwest Conference team, in another nonconference game on Saturday (9/3) at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
