BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring three first-half goals and claiming a 30-5 advantage on shots, the Augsburg College men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Jeff Butler (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.),
Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and
Tanner McCarthy (FY, Windsor Heights, Iowa/West Des Moines Dowling HS) scored goals for the Auggies (3-0-1 overall) in the victory.
Twenty different Auggies saw action in the game, as the Auggies outshot MSOE (2-3-1 overall) by a 30-5 margin, including a 16-3 advantage in shots on-goal.
Butler opened the scoring for the Auggies with a shot from
Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) just 7:08 into the game.
"Butler scored a very good goal early that set the tone for the first half," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Gottlieb's lay-back was right where Jeff wanted it for the volley to the lower left corner."
Augsburg scored twice in the final minutes of the first half. Sankoh converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute and McCarthy notched his first collegiate goal, scoring an unassisted goal on a steal and shot from 25 yards out in the 40th minute.
"Sankoh did well to earn the penalty and then calmly finished it. That was a good moment from him," Holker said. "He later put a fantastic ball in behind the backs to
Tanner McCarthy that Tanner hit into the GK. McCarthy would respond later, creating his own goal by picking the ball off their center back and burying it in the corner in his debut."
MSOE scored its lone goal in the 68th minute, as Michael Vanek (SR, Greenfield, Wis./South Milwaukee HS) scored on a drive from Brad Meissner (JR, Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead HS).
"Vanek hit a wonder strike off of our poor clearance. Credit to him for an incredible goal. There was nothing Lynch could do on that one," Holker said.
Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) collected two saves in goal for the Auggies. Jon Cerny (SR, Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien HS) had six saves in the first half for MSOE, and Garrett Farin (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) had six saves in the second half.
" I thought
Tyler Heaps (JR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) was good today, especially in the attack. He made very good choices and opened the game up a bit for us with the timing of his entry balls and crosses," Holker said.
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (9/18) at 1 p.m., hosting Carroll (Wis.) at Edor Nelson Field.
"Overall, we were good enough to get the result, but our finishing needs to be sharper as we think about tomorrow's game with Carroll. If our guys can picture it in the net before it happens, odds are we will score at a higher rate," Holker said. "Carroll will be a handful. They have an incredible work rate and desire, and have some really capable players in Steve Koprowski and Jordan Wickman. Their goalkeeping is strong as well, regardless of what happened last night at Macalester."
