Auggies score 1-0 win at Macalester

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) scored following a corner kick in the 60th minute, leading Augsburg College to a 1-0 victory over host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday evening.

Macody Lund's goal enabled Augsburg (5-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 MIAC) to win its first game at Macalester (3-4-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC) since a 2-1 win on Sept. 27, 1986 -- snapping a 12-game road losing streak to the Scots.

"It's the first win at Macalester during my era at Augsburg," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker, whose Auggie teams have now won three of the last four meetings with the Scots, the prior two wins both coming at Augsburg.

Goalkeeper Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) earned his third shutout of the season and eighth in his 12 career starts as an Auggie with a four-save effort, as the Auggie defense held off a late charge by the Scots.

"We had several chances to score in this game ahead of the goal we did grab, which would have alleviated some of the late stress that Macalester put on us," Holker said. "Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) did well to get on the end of an early free kick that he headed to (Macalester goalkeeper Matt) Weyer's hands, Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) smashed one off the upright, and then Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) bombed one that Weyer did very well to tip into the crossbar and then David Scheller (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) headed the rebound just wide.

"However, we got the one we needed to grab three points on the road against a very good Macalester team. They were always dangerous at any moment. I thought Peter Osborn was instrumental in our team's success tonight, perhaps playing his best game to date."

Augsburg claimed a 10-9 advantage in shots in the game, with Meyer claiming six saves for the Scots.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/24) at 7 p.m. with a home game against St. Thomas at Edor Nelson Field. The game will also feature a halftime ceremony honoring Augsburg's "All-Decade Team," recognizing the best players from the past 10 seasons for the Auggies.

"Now we have to move forward and address the explosive St. Thomas trio of Mike Hutton, Nick Rapisarda and Angel Riera among others Saturday night," Holker said. "We look forward to welcoming back our All-Decade Team and expect the night to be very exciting."
