Auggies fall 2-0 at St. Benedict

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) claimed seven saves in goal for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 2-0 decision to the host College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon.

Augsburg (4-4-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC) fell behind on a goal from Jess Pellegrene, assisted by Heather Beshears, in the fifth minute, and St. Benedict (4-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 MIAC) scored its second goal in the 68th minute, as Beshears scored from Colleen Bouchard.

"A tough loss because we played well and generated some quality chances," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "When you play the top teams, you have to finish and despite our effort we simply did not do that today. Credit St. Benedict, they got a great goal to start the game and made it stand."

Augsburg was outshot by a 9-1 margin in the game, with Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) collecting the only shot for the Auggies in the contest.

Augsburg faces nonconference opponents in its next two games, with a contest at Loras (Iowa) on Friday (9/30) at 5 p.m., and a game at Minnesota-Morris next Tuesday (10/4) at 3:30 p.m. The Auggies will host its alumnae scrimmage on Sunday (10/2) at 4 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

"Now we have a break from the MIAC, which will allow us to look at more players and really focus on the quality of our soccer," Navarre said. "It won't be easy for us on Friday as we have to make a one-day trip down to Dubuque to play one of the best teams in the country in Loras. Nevertheless, I see us using the Loras game, the alumnae scrimmage on Sunday, and our game with Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday to our advantage as we prepare to do our best in the MIAC."
