Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had a goal and two assists, as Augsburg College scored a 5-1 victory over host Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Niklas Almstrom (SO, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) scored his first collegiate goal for Augsburg (6-8-0 overall, 2-3-0 MIAC), and #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS),
John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) and
Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) all scored for the Auggies.
Pat Deitz had the lone goal of the game for Concordia (7-6-3 overall, 3-2-2 MIAC), which outshot Augsburg by a 32-21 margin in the game.
Augsburg, which is 3-2-0 in its last five games, has outscored its opponents by an 18-11 margin in the span. Ten different Auggies figured in the scoring in Friday's win, including
Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.), who had three asissts.
Almstrom notched his first collegiate goal at the 4:03 mark of the first period, assisted by
Ben McClellan.
The Auggies scored twice in the second period, as
B.J. McClellan scored from Doden and
Brandon Bukowski (SR, Superior, Wis.) 18 seconds into the frame, and Lennartson scored his sixth goal in the last five games, a power-play marker from
Ben McClellan and Doden at the 15:01 mark.
Augsburg took a 4-0 lead with Paine's third goal in his fifth collegiate game, assisted by
Derek Loisel (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS), two minutes into the third period.
Concordia cut the lead to 4-1 on Dietz's goal, assisted by Braden Rahman and Brian Kang, at the 11:08 mark, but Augsburg capped the scoring with
Ben McClellan's third goal of the year, a power-play marker from Doden and
David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS), with 4:16 left in the game.
For the Cobbers, Kelly Andrew took the loss in goal, saving nine shots in two periods of work. Chris Neamonitis had seven saves in the third period.
The teams complete the series on Saturday (1/14) at 2 p.m. in Moorhead.
