Auggies tie Hamline 2-2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) and #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies claimed a 2-2, overtime tie with visiting Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

In a thrilling, up-tempo contest that featured 78 combined shots on-goal, both goalies came up big, as Augsburg goalie Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) stopped 33 of Hamline's 35 shots, while Hamline goalie Beau Christian (SR, Moorhead, Minn.) stopped 41 of Augsburg's 43 shots.

Hamline (6-10-2 overall, 3-5-1 MIAC) opened the scoring at the 5:41 mark of the first period, as Jordan VanGilder (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored from Joel Scatterelli (SO, Elk River, Minn./Rogers HS) and Brian Arrigoni (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS).

Augsburg tied the game at the 14:53 mark of the opening stanza, with McClellan scoring his second goal of the season, assisted by David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS). For Hines, it was his team-best 10th assist of the season -- tied for sixth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.

The Pipers took the lead 1:08 into the third period, as Tim Olson (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) scored from Nick Widing (FY, Somerset, Wis.) and VanGilder. But Augsburg tied the game at the 2:11 mark of the period, with Doden scoring his team-high ninth goal of the season, an unassisted, power-play tally. Doden's nine goals are currently tied for fourth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics.

Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had seven shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) had five shots and Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) had four shots.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/21) at 2 p.m. at the Vadnais Heights (Minn.) Sports Center.
